AWS Reserved Instances

Reduce underutilization and expenditures and take actionable recommendation based on AWS dashboard data.
The dashboard gives you optimization insights that help them take actions to minimize costs and risks and give step-by-step actions that result in efficient consumption of reserved resources.
To learn more about navigating to the different services from each tenant, refer to refer to Landing page navigation or Kyndryl Bridge Landing page navigation.
At the beginning of the dashboard, you find:
  • The type of corporate currency
: The Corporate Currency is the single currency which is used to display all currency values in Kyndryl Modern Operations Applications. To learn more about corporate currency, go to Defining the corporate currency.
  • View ingestion status
: You can view the ingestion status related to specific provider cost data. When clicking this option, you can view a list of providers and ingestion status, you can click View All to navigate to the job page to see full details on job status.  To learn more about jobs, go to: managing jobs.
  • Billing account
: Where you can add the billing account identifier.
On the AWS Reserved Instances dashboard, the
Summary
tab provides a snapshot of the current reserved instances versus the on-demand count, reserved instances utilization, reserved instances coverage, and the overall estimated savings by following the recommendations given in the three levels.
The summary panel on each of the recommendations gives a snapshot of the benefit derived from recommendations in terms of cost savings, utilization, and coverage.
Follow the recommendations in the order outlined below:
  • Retire or Renew:
Recommendations include the reservations that can be retired or renewed based on the age and utilization. The benefit is reduction in monthly cost. This is the first step of recommendation.
  • Enhance Scope:
Recommendations include the reserved instances where the scope can be changed from
    Zonal
    to
    Region
, resulting in better coverage, utilization, and cost savings. This step must be completed before moving to the Buy or Refund recommendations.
  • Buy or Refund:
Recommendations include refunding reservations in over-represented asset classes or buying reservations in under-represented asset classes, resulting in better coverage, utilization, and cost savings.
A
refund
is either an attempt to sell the reserved instances on AWS Marketplace, or a request to AWS for a refund if the reserved instances were purchased by mistake.
AI data displayed on the RI dashboard is specifically for a selected billing account. After specifying the billing account, you can go through the three levels in order to reach an optimal level of utilization and expenditure for your assets.
The summary values for the levels, both across the top banner and in the paragraphs, reflect the delta values from the previous steps. The values in the graphs reflect the total values at that specific level.
Dynamic Resource Groups (DRG) defined for the user has to be at provider or billing account level for the user to view the corresponding details in the dashboard.
The cumulative average utilization of reservations in Reserved Instances table of Summary tab will not match with the total reserved instance utilization displayed in Summary of AWS RI dashboard. This happens as reserved instance (RI) count with utilization is applicable for the individual reservations in table where as the total resource utilization in Summary is calculated by dividing RI hours used by the RI hours available.

Reserved Instances reports

The Reserved Instances Reports are strategic and designed for customers with a large number of reserved instances and capacities. Customers with on-demand VMs running production workloads with high sustained usage can also use these reports.
The reports run once a month, preferably on or after the 6th of the month, and use the finalized bill from the previous month, not the current month's bill. For new customers, data in the dashboard is available after the 6th of the month when a successful ingestion is executed.
