Utilization scores

Configure utilization bands and define utilization calculations for your assets.
This feature allows you to configure the utilization score of your assets with metrics and set specific formulas for each asset.
To view the list of services supported by default on the utilization configuration, go to: Supported Service Provider
For each provider service, you can add a new metric that modifies the utilization score calculation. You can add one or more metrics min/max/avg added or subtracted from each other. You can also configure a range of utilization metrics levels (High, Medium, Low, etc) for the utilization metrics obtained for the provider.
To calculate the utilization scores, we exclude outliers by only including the values you select when configuring utilization scores, and those values fall within the 95th percentile. The utilization scores are measured once every hour so that the data you get is more accurate.
Note: The calculation of data may vary depending on the factors, which may result in a different value from one product to another.
The utilization metrics range explanation for the service in the asset dashboard will be updated, including the asset heatmap displayed on the asset dashboard.

Pre-requisites

  1. You must have
    Admin / Co-Admin
access to AWS account and linked account to be able to obtain metrics information. The
    Cloud Watch
service needs to be enabled for the Asset Account for Utilization/Metrics Data. Please Refer to this link for further steps on enabling the account: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonCloudWatch/latest/monitoring/GettingSetup.html
  2. To enable the feature flag, go to: Supported Utilization Metrics
To learn more about navigating to the different services from each tenant, refer to Landing page navigation or Kyndryl Bridge Landing page navigation.
A new window displays the utilization score and bands for the supported assets on the table showing the asset type metrics and bands available. This table contains the following columns:
  • Provider
: The specific provider(s) are indicated.
  • Asset type
: The type of asset according to the provider previously reflected.
  • Status
: The status of the utilization configuration between active and inactive.
  • Data refresh time
: Indicates the last time in which the metric data was refreshed.
  • Utilization bands
: Indicated the specific utilization level and its formula; the levels are high, medium, low, and very low.

Define metrics and use them in asset utilization calculation

Create and add a new utilization metric

You can create and define a new utilization metric and add it to a new asset calculation. First, you have to define the metric to be used and create new formulas.
  • Metrics can be defined only when the data is made available by the provider.
  • If metrics are set up for the selected asset, a message pops up indicating that you have defined all metrics available; however, you can still edit an asset calculation.
Follow the steps to add a new utilization metric to your type of calculation:
  1. Click
    CAM
    , and then click
    Utilization Configuration
    located under
    Settings
    . Click
    Define Utilization Metric
    .
  2. A new window displays four sections,
    utilization calculations
    ,
    utilization formula
    ,
    Utilization band definition
    ,
    Version history of selected calculation
    .
  3. On the utilization calculation section you see the last metric option to be created. Go to the
    Utilization Formula
section. Create the formulas as needed. You can select between CPUUtilization min, avg, and max. Once the formula is created, click
    Done
    .
  4. Enter the
    Metric data refresh time
, you can select between 30, 14 and 7 days.
  5. Enter the description of your formula on the writing block to keep track of the formula selected.
  6. Go back to the utilization calculation section and click
    Save Changes
, the page refreshes, and the new metric appears as part of the utilization calculation.
  7. Activate the new metric
: On the Utilization Calculation table, go to the
    Status
column, and click the arrow to turn it green which means that your metric is active and ready to be used.
  8. Update the utilization calculation with the added metric
: On the Utilization Calculation table, click
    Edit
    , go to the
    Utilization Formula
section and select the new metric created, click
    Done
    .
  9. Set the metric to appear on the asset heatmap dashboard
: On the Utilization Calculation table, go to the
    Default on asset heatmap
column, and click the arrow to turn it green, which means the calculation is displayed by default for the asset on the Cost v. Utilization heatmap in the Asset dashboard.

Edit Metric Calculation

You can edit the metric calculation, including its details and band definition, refresh data time, and update the formula's description.
  1. Click
    CAM
    , and then click
    Utilization Configuration
    located under
    Settings
. Select the metric type from the table.
  2. A new window opens with related metrics and asset calculations. Click the metric you need to update from the table.
  3. You can update the percentile, set it to appear by default on the heatmap in the asset dashboard, metric data refresh time, description of the formula, configure the band levels between very low, low, medium, or high, and click
    Save changes
. A message pops up indicating that changes have been saved.
If you need to create a new metric calculation or activate it, go to: Create and add a new utilization metric

Edit Asset Calculation

You can edit the utilization calculation with all the details of the asset calculation, its band definition, refresh data time, and update the formula's description.
  1. Click
    CAM
    , and then click
    Utilization Configuration
    located under
    Settings
. Select the asset type from the table.
  2. A new window opens with related assets and calculations. Click the asset you want to update from the table.
  3. A new window displays, you can update utilization formula, set the asset to appear by default on the heatmap in the asset dashboard, select and create your formula by using the defined metrics, add the description of the formula.
  4. Configure the band levels between very low, low, medium, or high, and click
    Save changes
. A message pops up indicating that changes have been saved.
If you require to create a new metric calculation or activate it, go to: Create and add a new utilization metric
