Azure Commitment Based Discount

Learn how to get Azure pricing savings.
The Azure commitment-based discounts dashboard provides a flexible pricing model that offers significant savings on your Azure compute usage in exchange for a specific usage commitment.
On this dashboard, you can view utilization of your assets, saving plans, coverage reports, reservation instances to optimize your resources according to your needs.  To access the Azure Commitment Based Discount dashboard, go to
Cost & Asset Management

Dashboard components

To view the information you have to enable a feature flag, to do so, go to: Azure Commitment Based Discount Feature Flag
To navigate the Azure Commitment Based Discounts Dashboard, it is important to understand the features, and widgets that contribute to understanding and analyzing the data quickly and clearly. When the dashboard displays you find distinctive features that provide information. At the beginning of the dashboard, you find:
  • View ingestion status: You can view the ingestion status related to specific provider cost data. When clicking this option, you can view a list of providers and ingestion status, you can click View All to navigate to the job page to see full details on job status. To learn more about jobs, go to: managing jobs.
This dashboard offers four sections to analyze data, these sections are:
  1. View the summary of:
    • What-if Calculator
    • Reservation Utilization Report
    • Saving Plan Utilization Report
    • Coverage Report.

Configuring dashboard sections

The dashboard has a feature to move sections up or down or collapse the section entirely, to organize and display the most important content. Configurable sections include arrows and a dash to control movement to collapse the section.
  • To move a section up, click the up arrow located on the right side of the configurable section.
  • To move a section down, click the down arrow located on the right side of the configurable section.
  • To collapse the section, click the dash located on the right side of the configurable section.
The configuration persists and displays until changed. The configuration can be changed at any time.

Configure the dashboard view

You can configure the Dashboard View for Reservation Utilization Report, Savings Plan Utilization Report, and Coverage Report tab. On the tool bar of the dashboard view, you can select the specific data to analyze, and use: saved views, data sets and filters to specify the costs you want to view.
  • Filters: Use filters to analyze specific costs. Each selection defines the data available for analysis. As a filter selection is made, the data available in subsequent filter items is limited. For example, selecting a specific provider in the filter will limit the accounts to just those for the selected provider. The filters available are:
    • Provider: Select one or more providers for cost analysis.
    • Billing account: Select one or more billing accounts for cost analysis. Selecting one or more providers limits the available billing accounts to those associated with the selected providers.
    • Asset account: Select one or more asset accounts for cost analysis. Selecting one or more providers or one or more billing accounts limits the available asset accounts to those associated with the selections.
    • Category: Select one or more categories for cost analysis. Selecting one or more providers, one or more billing accounts, one or more asset accounts limits the available categories to those associated with the selections. Categories are system defined groups of asset types. Administrators can modify how asset types are associated to a category. See Asset Categorization for more information.
    • Asset type: Select one or more asset types for cost analysis. Selecting one or more providers, one or more billing accounts, one or more asset accounts or one or more categories will limit the available asset types0 to those associated with the selections. Asset types are defined by the cloud provider.
    • Provider Tag: Users can search and select cloud provider tags associated costs. When adding characters on the text box data related to all cost items and tag value that match the tag key are shown. When searching for more than one tag key, you can use the logical operation as required. Two or more tag keys can be searched at the same time using the 'AND’ operator. You can also look for different tags by using the ‘OR’ option.
Once a Saved View, Data Set or Filter is selected, on the Dashboard view next to the filter tab, all selected criteria is shown in different colors. You can click the criteria to edit it or remove it.
To compare cost counts, the cost dashboard contains the Compare Costs feature which gives you the possibility to have a deeper look on your costs’ details.
  1. Select Compare Costs option located at the top right side of the graph, you can select a maximum of 50 options for one segment at a time.
  2. Click the drop-down menu and select the cost data you want to view or search for it on the search bar. The available options are the default segments. Additional segments can be configured for provider tags or Dynamic Tags. See Configuring Segment Charts for more information. Once the desired segments are selected, click Apply.
  3. The Cost Trend and Total Costs Table shows the cost data based on the segments previously selected to view and analyze on the graph.
The compare cost will not impact the total cost on summary and segment chart, the compare cost table shows the single trendline that the dashboard provides.

What if calculator

Utilization over time
The Utilization over Time graphs reflects two graphs:
  • Current Utilization
    : This graph shows the current reserved instances, saving plans, and on-demand usage. The graph gives the number of utilizations and the timeline of each utilization for analysis.
  • Recommended Utilization
    : Provides the recommended utilizations for azure reserve instances, saving plans, and additional eligible usage. The graph gives the number of assets utilized through the timeline.
You can filter the graphs’ information by filtering the billing account and billing frequency.
Optimization Goals for Azure Reservations
The optimization goals for azure reservations, helps you view the  of the discounts to make an informative decision.
You can apply the following filters to have a deeper insight about reservations:
  • Scope
    : You can select between shared and single.
  • Type of discount plan
    : Select between reserved instances, savings plan, reserved instances/saving plans split.
  • Days of usage history
    : The history of the reservations.
  • Desired coverage
    : The coverage within the reservation.
  • Single Scope subscription
    : Select the subscription that you want to specifically view.
  • Discount plan period
    : The description of the period in which the discount is available.
Once you have selected all the filters, click Apply Filters to update the data or if you would like to reset the filters, click Reset Filters.

Reservation utilization and Savings Plans report

Filter the graph information by defining your dashboard view.
Reservation Utilization and savings plans graph allows you to view the percentage of your reservations and saving that you are using, you can view the utilization percentage over time per each month and make comparisons and get recommendations.

Coverage report

Filter the graph information by defining your dashboard view.
You can view coverage for your resource usage by on-demand, reserved instances, and savings plans. The graphs show the hours of usage over month where each colour line represents each of the categories previously mentioned.
Detailed Table The summary table provides detailed information of the assets(products) that you currently have, click the specific asset or row that you want to take a deeper look. A new window opens with all the information related to the asset. You can select the view of the Unite Summary Table and filter it to view only the information that you require and need to see.
Click the Column icon, on the right side of the table. The application responds by displaying a list of criteria to view. You can click Select all for the application to display all the data available or click on the check box to select the specific details you wish to view.
Depending on the tab that you are on, what if calculator, reservation utilization report, saving plan utilization report and coverage report would be the filters displayed on the summary table.

  • Quantity
  • Last Day Utilization

displays the following columns:
  • Asset Type
  • Asset Name
  • Region
  • Reservation
  • Instance Flexibility Group
  • Hours Covered by Reservation
  • On-Demand Hours
