Cost v.utilization heatmap

Use the Cost v. Utilization heat map to visually compare the cost of your assets to their utilizations.

Viewing utilization and asset status

The Cost v. Utilization map can be viewed from various perspectives by selecting the
Utilization Level
and
Asset Status
filters, located in the data filters of the Assets Dashboard.
To change the utilization level, select one of the utilization level filters. The graphic refreshes and displays only the assets that fall within the designated level, very low, low, medium, and high.
The range of these utilization levels can be large. For example, a value for VolumeIdleTimeMin of 300 represents how long the volume is idle for an asset, resulting in a very low utilization level. Another asset might have a CPU utilization value of zero, which also results in a very low utilization level. In these examples, both zero and 300 result is a very low utilization level.
To apply an
asset status
, select one of the asset status filters. The graphic refreshes and displays only the assets in the selected asset status category.
A
Terminated
asset is one that has been decommissioned. Asset status can be
Unknown
in certain circumstances. For example, when assets have no recognized location or region, the system displays the message
unknown location
. Unknown can also mean one of the following:
  • Asset status cannot be determined because the data is too far back in history.
  • Utilization cannot be determined as a result of using storage as a service.
  • Non-geographic locations, like IBM® Cloud IMS region or Microsoft™ Azure's
    Unspecified
    location.
Other conditions, return the message
unknown
in other parts of Cost & Asset Management Platform (CAM) as well.
Asset status can be
No Creds
when data is found based on billing account credentials, but no asset credentials were provided.
To return to an all-asset view, deselect the
Utilization Level
and
Asset Status
filters. The graphic refreshes and displays all assets.
Private Cloud Data visualization is also available under the Cost vs. Utilization graphic.

Viewing data for a specific asset

To view data for a specific asset, hover over a block on the heat map to view the following asset data:
  • Asset ID.
  • Asset Name.
  • Provider.
  • Cost.
  • Asset Status.
  • Utilization Score.
Private Cloud Visualization is available in the Assets Dashboard only for Private Cloud Data.
By default, the heat map initially shows only assets that have both cost and utilization data.
You can also navigate to specific asset's line item details by clicking on that asset in the graphic.
When viewing the Cost v. Utilization graphics, note that each box or square represents one asset. The size of each box represents the cost of that asset. The larger the box, the greater the asset cost is.

Compare costs

To compare cost counts, the cost dashboard contains the Compare Costs feature which gives you the possibility to have a deeper look on your costs’ details.
  1. Select Compare Costs option located at the top right side of the graph, you can select a maximum of 50 options for one segment at a time.
  2. Click the drop-down menu and select the cost data you want to view or search for it on the search bar. The available options are the default segments. Additional segments can be configured for provider tags or Dynamic Tags. See Configuring Segment Charts for more information. Once the desired segments are selected, click Apply.
  3. The Cost Trend and Total Costs Table shows the cost data based on the segments previously selected to view and analyze on the graph.
The compare cost will not impact the total cost on summary and segment chart, the compare cost table shows the single trendline that the dashboard provides.

View asset count by period

Review and analyze assets performance.
Use the Count/Location list to display the number of assets in each location. The asset count number increases as more assets are identified. Asset status can be
Unknown
in certain circumstances. For example, when assets have no recognized location or region, the system displays the message
unknown location
. Unknown can also mean one the following:
  • Asset status cannot be determined because the data is too far back in history.
  • Utilization cannot be determined as a result of using storage as a service.
  • Non-geographic locations, like IBM Cloud's IMS region or Azure's
    Unspecified
    location.
Other conditions return the message
unknown
in other parts of Cost and Asset Management as well.
